My bedroom door slamming open wakes me from a restless sleep and I sit up to a seething Alex. He stalks over to me, pulls his elbow back and punches me with a mean right hook. As soon as I saw him, I knew what was coming. I deserve it.

“If you need to, hit me again.” Standing, I face him straight on and wait.

“You deserved that one, but I think another is uncalled for. How could you let that nut job into your house? You’re the one who warned us about her and then you invite her in? What are you going to do to fix this?” Crossing his arms, he cocks his eyebrow and looks at me expectantly.

“I know. I’m an idiot. I’m still working on how to fix this, any suggestions?” Pursing his lips, he shakes his head. That has been the consensus of the day. I’m on my own to fix this mess. “I’m guessing you’re here because you found her.”

“I did.”

“How is she?”

“Honestly, if I didn’t know that you’re innocent in all this I wouldn’t tell you, but you’re just an idiot.” As he shares the information, horror fills me. Legs weak, I sit on my bed as he goes into detail after detail about bruises, a broken wrist, and the emptiness fighting to return. The only hope I have is that Alex said as much as she tried to shut down, it never quite reached her eyes.

“I can’t believe I did it again. I promised I wouldn’t.”

“A good start would be setting some boundaries with people you know aren’t trustworthy. You’re a grown ass man. Secondly, don’t make promises you can’t keep.” With that Alex leaves my room.
